Carmona is the 17th Surgeon General of the US.
I admire this person. He together with other later Surgeon Generals tried, however in vain to do something about the coming obesity crisis in America but was suppressed at every turn.
I wanted to highlight him in this newsletter to again reveal that the causes of obesity is not so mysterious when you have all the data.
Carmona was the Surgeon General that released the pivotal report on second hand smoke.1 Carmona stated: "The debate is over. The science is clear: Secondhand smoke is not a mere annoyance, but a serious health hazard."2
He is the reason the term, “secondhand smoke” is a household term.
Carmona is also known as the outspoken Surgeon General. He has testified before congress about how the Bush administration suppressed his findings on secondhand smoke and pressured him not to testify in the tobacco industry's racketeering trial.3
On July 10, 2007, Carmona, along with former Surgeons General C. Everett Koop and David Satcher, testified before the United States House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform about political and ideological interference with the Surgeon General's mission.
Carmona accused the Bush Administration of preventing him from speaking out on certain public health issues such as embryonic stem cell research, global climate change,4 emergency contraception, and abstinence-only education, where the Administration's political stance conflicted with scientific and medical opinion.5
Carmona stated, "Anything that doesn't fit into the political appointees' ideological, theological or political agenda is ignored, marginalized or simply buried."6,7
Below is a video of Carmona and his testimony. He has warned about the obesity epidemic for a long time. You will see that the causes of obesity are not vague and myserious. Overweight and sick populations are profitable.
