Child Diet: Weight Loss for Children

Child diet is the focus here because getting exercise is rarely going to be the problem for children. They are physically quite active. Adults have to be prodded a bit to find a way to get more mobile and moving their bodies.

So the focus in on the food they eat and drink. Like the premise of this site, the first step is always going to be having good information that works and applying it. The worst thing that can be done with regard to children is to provide wrong information. It won't ever be too early to give right information.

I love children and spend a lot of time with children. One thing I learned the hard way is this: The best thing I can do to help a child is to assist them in making better decisions when you are not there.

The trick here is not what to feed children. The trick is seeing through their eyes what will make them want to chose healthy food. Even harder is to help a child make the right choice when it is most difficult. A case in point is when a child is at school, where cafeterias are filled with poison disguised as food.

When his or her best friends are eating and drinking horribly unhealthy food packaged in very attractive ways that are designed to make them feel cooler if they are eating or drinking it, what will motivate your child to make a different choice?

There are some people who I respect tremendously that have provided gems of wisdom that are practical and work.

The first is a lady named Jennifer Shmoo. She is a Vegan and was faced with the threat of having her young son go off to school where all the choices available to him were terribly unhealthy and toxic. The cafeteria food was horrible and his friends were eating unhealthy food at lunch time. She was able to see things through her sons eyes and solved the problem in an extremely creative manner. You can read about how she did this in her book "The Vegan Lunch Box".

Some Tools To Help Children

Spiralizer

A spiralizer is a great tool. It is pretty inexpensive. About $13 to $20. You can get a child to use it to make spagghetti out of zucchini, carrots, cucumber or any firm elongated vegetable. The spiralizer becomes a toy for them and so does the food. I found this works well in that children become interested in eating these foods when it is interesting to them in other ways than taste.

Cookie Cutters

A cookie cutter is another tool. This can be used on anything that can be cut with a cookie cutter. I used it with spouted bread, dehydrated fruits and vegetables, beets and many more moisture-rich and mineral-rich foods. Again, the food become interesting in more ways than just taste.

Sleep

Sleep and rest is important to help with sugar cravings. Making sure there is enough rest is important for both adults and children in reducing cravings but children will have less control and less understanding as to why excess sugar is not good.

Sweeteners

Sweeteners are another tool. Use stevia to sweeten drinks and foods. For drinks, I juice celery and apple. This is sweet enough to satisfy them and also apple AND celery are extremely high in potassium which will keep them hydrated.

Raw Deserts

For deserts I use frozen bananas and frozen strawberries (or any kind of berries). I put it through my Omega Juicer and it creates a frozen raw fruit ice cream consistency for them. If they want vanilla or chocolate, then I process frozen banana then mix in one table spoon of unsweetened cocoa powder, mix and a chocolate raw ice cream is made. For vanilla, I use extract.
