Relationship Between Estrogen and Thyroid
"This page is to show the relationship between estrogen and the thyroid."
This is a lesser known fact and I have rarely heard it discussed in the context of weight loss but too much estrogen that is unbalanced with progesterone will cause fat storage. Estrogen is a fat storing hormone in itself but there is also another factor to estrogen, whether it is bio-identical, naturally produced by your ovaries or is a Xenoestrogen or an Environmental Estrogen. Estrogen also suppresses thyroid production and also affects free flowing thyroid hormone in the blood. For thyroid hormones (or any hormone for that matter) to be effective, it needs to be free and unbound. If it is bound then it is formed into another compound. Most hormones are not free. What little there is can be affected by environmental toxins that act like hormones and bind to them before they can be used. Birth control pills and estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) can lead to estrogen dominance (an excess of the hormone estrogen in the relation to progesterone), which inhibits the thyroid.1 Estrogen (including the estrogen in birth control pills) and well-known thyroid inhibiting drugs. Sulfa drugs and anti-diabetic drugs also slow thyroid function.2 “Excessively high levels of estrogen may diminish the effectiveness of your thyroid hormones. Therefore, a full assessment of your thyroid function is suggested if you are having trouble managing your PCOS symptoms.”3 “Additionally, too much estrogen opposes thyroid function”4 “John Lee, M.D., has also observed that women taking estrogen exhibited traditional symptoms of low thyroid hormone, yet fell within the normal rage when tested.”5 The problem here is that instead of women being examined for all possible areas of possible sources of hypothyroidism, they are quickly given medication or prescribed surgery to treat the thyroid rather than looking at possible estrogen dominance or excess estrogen or even adrenal fatigue. Each of which can result in symptoms of hypothyroidism. References - Burton Goldberg, Larry Trivieri, John W. Anderson. Alternative medicine: the definitive guide
