Immune system

QUESTION
I read that 70% of the immune system is in the intestines (per yogurt manufacturers). What does that mean? Does the healthy bacteria in the intestines prevent you from getting sick or help you recover faster?
ANSWER
Well, that is a new one! It never seems to end =oP! I am referring to the use of out of context pieces of information to promote a product.
I suppose the first obvious point to bring up is that there is no way to quantify immunity. So until the author of that piece of information may have to show the clinical data that led to that conclusion.
There are bacteria in the digestive tract, particularly in the colon that regulate the health of the respective sections of the digestive tract.
But they are only one part of the entire immune system.
Based on my research and experience, there are some things that affect the immune system more than others.
Using the Pareto principle of 80-20, I want to teach the 20% of the input that produce 80% of the output.
The common denominator to lowered immune function is excess cortisol, and lowered oxygenation. Both of these lead to an adrenal system that is over stressed.
The adrenals play a major function with immunity. You will find auto-immune diseases and illnesses in general that are taking too long to heal will always have adrenals that are weakenned.
One of the symptoms of fatugued adrenals is dificulty digesting. So in that respect there is a relationship.
I hope this clarifies things for you.
Cheers!
