Metabolic Syndrome and
Weight Loss

"The metabolic syndrome is the
greatest killer of Americans at this time."

metabolic syndrome

The syndrome is comprised of a group of factors in one person. It is not one thing. It is a spiral that leads from one thing to another until you have several life threatening issues.

They include:

  • Abdominal obesity (excessive fat tissue in and around the abdomen)
  • Blood fat disorders — high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol and high LDL cholesterol — that helps create plaque buildups in arterial walls)
  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Insulin resistance or glucose intolerance (the body can’t properly use insulin or blood sugar) which leads to diabetes.
  • Coagulated blood clot in blood vessels
  • Excessive inflammation

Risks To Your Life

Metabolic syndrome, AKA belly fat, means increased risk of coronary heart disease and other diseases related to plaque buildups (e.g., stroke and peripheral vascular disease) and type 2 diabetes. The metabolic syndrome has become increasingly common in the United States.

The main factors that contribute to this syndrome appear to be abdominal obesity (belly fat) and resistance to insulin (which follows abdominal obesity), whereby the body can’t use insulin efficiently. So this means that if we are dealing with belly fat, health has gone out the door a while ago. Belly fat is a delayed reaction.

This is why the metabolic syndrome is also called the insulin resistance syndrome. Belly fat, overloads the receptors for insulin and makes the muscle cells resistant to insulin. This is the beginning of diabetes.

Other conditions associated with the syndrome include physical inactivity, aging and hormonal imbalance.

Belly fat/visceral fat also causes resistance and desensitization to leptin the I'm full hormone.

Although leptin is a circulating signal that reduces appetite, in general, obese people have an unusually high circulating concentration of leptin. These people are resistant to the effects of leptin, in much the same way that people with type 2 diabetes are resistant to the effects of insulin. The high sustained concentrations of leptin from the enlarged fat stores result in leptin desensitization. The pathway of leptin control in obese people might be flawed at some point so the body doesn't adequately receive the “I’m Full” feeling hormone subsequent to eating.[1]

How is the Metabolic Syndrome Medically Diagnosed?

The American Heart Association and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommend that the metabolic syndrome be identified as the presence of three or more of these components:

  • High waist circumference:
    • Men — Equal to or greater than 40 inches (102 cm)
    • Women — Equal to or greater than 35 inches (88 cm)
  • High triglycerides: Equal to or greater than 150 mg/dL
  • Low HDL (“good”) cholesterol:
    • Men — Less than 40 mg/dL
    • Women — Less than 50 mg/dL
  • Elevated blood pressure: Equal to or greater than 130/85 mm Hg
  • Elevated fasting glucose: Equal to or greater than 100 mg/dL

Primary Goal

The primary goal of the clinical management of metabolic syndrome is to reduce the risk for Cardiovascular Disease and Type 2 Diabetes. The first-line therapy is to reduce belly fat which contributes to all of the above.

All the tools in this site work for belly fat but one in particular is important. Stress. Anything that reduces stress in any form will reduce belly fat. Going on a liquid, high-mineral fast for a week or so, will also be more important. A period of recuperation is key for belly fat reduction.

Reduction of sugar is also very very important. A body with belly fat or visceral fat is trained to use only sugar or mainly sugar. It actually has a hard time using other sources of fuel. The body needs to be retrained.

The thing that people fall down on with losing belly fat is they try harder when they need more relaxation and recuperation. Stress causes belly fat. So working out harder does not reduce belly fat it causes stress.

Doing crunches also makes the muscles bigger which adds to the inches, causes more physical stress on the nervous system and more cortisol is secreted and more belly fat is made.

Straight elimination of sugar will be very very helpful for a time period. Moderate oxygenating exercise will also help. The page on best exercise to lose weight will help you with determining your correct intensity level to lose fat. Cellular hydration is also very key.

A body with belly fat needs to be rewired to use fat instead of sugar for energy.
