The Moisture Index:
A new way to look at food to lose weight. Learn about Food that reduces fat.Moisture Index (Mi): The Weight Loss Value of FoodThe Moisture Index of foods, or “MI,” is the percentage of water (by weight), in a particular natural food measured in its natural unprocessed state. The main concept here is that natural, unprocessed foods that have been in human consumption for thousands/millions of years, when cultivated naturally or wild crafted have the proper water and mineral content to keep the “battery” inside the body at optimum settings. Let’s take cucumber for example… A large cucumber (8 ¼ inches = 3 full cups when sliced) has a total of only 45 calories, which is just about the calories found in one small teaspoon of oil. So calorie wise, or macronutrient wise, it is somwwhat insignificant. However, hydration-wise it provides a 10-oz large glass of water along with all of the following: MINERALS: Calcium | 48.2 | mg | Sodium | 6.0 | mg | Iron | 0.8 | mg | Zinc | 0.6 | mg | Magnesium | 39.1 | mg | Copper | 0.1 | mg | Phosphorus | 72.2 | mg | Manganese | 0.2 | mg | Potassium | 44.2 | mg | Selenium | 0.9 | mcg | VITAMINS: Vitamin A | 316 | IU | Thiamin | 0.1 | mg | Retinol Activity Equivalent | 15.1 | mcg | Riboflavin | 0.1 | mg | Alpha Carotene | 33.1 | mcg | Niacin | 0.3 | mg | Beta Carotene | 135 | mcg | Vitamin B6 | 0.1 | mg | Beta Cryptoxanthin | 78.2 | mcg | Folate | 21.1 | mcg | Lutein+Zeaxanthin | 69.2 | mcg | Food Folate | 21.1 | mcg | Vitamin C | 8.4 | mg | Pantothenic Acid | 0.8 | mg | Vitamin E | 0.1 | mg | Vitamin K | 49.4 | mcg | … and incidentally, it contains the necessary protein to make the minerals organic and carry them through the intestinal wall into the body: AMINO ACIDS: Tryptophan | 15.1 | mg | Cystine | 12.0 | mg | Alanine | 72.2 | mg | Threonine | 57.2 | mg | Phenylalanine | 57.2 | mg | Aspartic acid | 123 | mg | Isoleucine | 63.2 | mg | Tyrosine | 33.1 | mg | Glutamic acid | 590 | mg | Leucine | 87.3 | mg | Valine | 66.2 | mg | Glycine | 72.2 | mg | Lysine | 87.3 | mg | Arginine | 132 | mg | Proline | 45.1 | mg | Methionine | 18.1 | mg | Histidine | 30.1 | mg | Serine | 60.2 | mg | And that’s all in one single cucumber! Who wudda thunk? This is a prime example of the kind of high MI food that fuels the “battery”! Before going into any further details, you should realize that food MI is only one criterion we consider when evaluating whether or not a certain food is good for your body. Whole foods that are consumed in season in their raw and uncooked state are almost always high in water and minerals content. Some natural foods, when consumed in their natural state you can eat them to your heart’s content. However, when consumed by modern man out of their season (mostly dried to make them available year round) they are “unnaturally” low in water content, hence must be consumed sparingly and in moderation. Green almond for example is consumed in the east Mediterranean region as a high MI food. An average green almond weighs 5 grams versus only 2 grams for a dried one. Water content, or MI, is 88 versus only 5 for the dried ones. Fat and carbs are also low at 2% and 3% respectively, versus 54% and 17% for the dried almonds. So as you can see the fault is not in the natural foods. It is in our choice to dry them before eating them. And for your information, I have been talking about natural sun drying, only. If you roast them in ovens or with oil or honey, etc. you’ve turned a wholesome food into a source of more trouble than natural goodness for your battery. Don’t judge foods by their MI numbers alone. For instance, take prepared foods, which are cooked or in any way processed. They may seem to be high MI, but this is produced mainly by adding water to the food and processing it in some way to incorporate the water into it. This is NOT true MI. An example of that are sodas, which can have a false MI of over 90% but are bad for the “battery” and in fact outright dehydrating to the cells, as they contain one or more of these substances: - Sugar, which increases your body’s acidity and overworks the kidneys to eliminate it, along with many essential minerals;
- An artificial sweetener, which would have to be detoxified in the liver, thus increasing the need for elimination, which causes water loss;
- Caffeine, which is a mineral wasting diuretic.
Another example of beverages that may seem to have high MI is alcoholic drinks. Unfortunately, their alcohol content damages the liver and other organs of the body, and this far outweighs the benefits of their water content. Furthermore, alcohol is a diuretic, which causes the body to lose fluids and become dehydrated. One possible exception would be high quality red wine for its acclaimed antioxidant benefits when consumed in moderation: a glass a day or every other day. For the most part the moisture index (MI) of raw whole food is a true representation of food’s ability to reset the switch that controls the “battery” to an optimum level. Of course, when you dehydrate raw food, as many raw foodists do, you are creating an imbalance the body is better off without. The Food Moisture Index The Food Moisture Index is a functional food index that is designed to be used by anyone. It was created to help my patients better understand what foods to eat in order to improve their cellular hydration and with that “alone” lose weight and gain health. Foods on the index are divided into ten categories, based on their Moisture Index (MI), and thus their ability to hydrate the cells of the body and activate the “battery.” Prepared foods listed in the food pyramid are best prepared with vegetable juices instead of plain water to make sure that their MI's are accurate. Category 1: Liquid Food(90-100 MI) This is the category for foods that give the body fasy weight loss through safe detoxification of the entire body. This is the most effective way to reset the Switch. Important Note: Solid foods listed below are so high in water content that they are truly nature’s containers of pure water, wonderfully flavored by the essence of the fruits and vegetables in this category. This is why they are figuratively listed as “liquid” foods. Hydrating Liquids Moisture Index Non carbonated Spring Water | 100 | Caffeine Free Tea; Unsweetened | 100 | Vegetable Juice | 96 | Milk; Skim; Raw | 96 | Vinegar; Apple Cider | 94 | Vegetable Broth, Homemade | 92 | Lemon Juice; Raw | 91 | Lime Juice, Raw | 90 | Non Starchy Vegetables Moisture Index Lettuce | 96 | Cucumber | 96 | Collards | 96 | Radishes | 95 | Celery | 95 | Turnips | 94 | Squash; Summer | 94 | Mustard Greens | 94 | Endive; Curly | 94 | Cabbage; Chinese | 94 | Bamboo Shoots | 94 | Peppers; Sweet | 93 | Cabbage (Sauerkraut too) | 93 | Turnip Greens | 93 | Cucumber; Pickles; (Dill ONLY) | 93 | Cabbage; Red (Sauerkraut too) | 92 | Spinach | 92 | Eggplant | 92 | Cauliflower | 92 | Onions | 91 | Mushrooms | 91 | Kale | 91 | Cabbage; Savoy | 91 | Broccoli | 91 | Beet | 91 | Asparagus | 91 | Snap Bean | 91 | Okra Pods | 90 | Kohlrabi | 90 | Dandelion Greens | 90 | Sprouts Moisture Index Alfalfa Sprouts; Raw | 91 | Mung Bean sprouts; Raw | 90 | Juicy Fruits and Fruit Juices (ALL Fresh and Raw) Moisture Index Tomato juice | 94 | Tomatoes | 94 | Watermelon | 92 | Strawberries | 92 | Grapefruit; Pink or White | 91 | Honeydew Melon | 90 | Cantaloupe | 90 | Grapefruit juice | 90 | Category 2: Raw Food(80-89 MI) This is the category of foods one must consume on a reducing diet for consistant weight loss and health promotion. Important Note: This is an entirely raw food category that is designed to help the body lose weight fairly quickly and healthfully. You don’t have to eat ALL of the “raw” items on the list, such as raw eggs and fish, etc. if you are not used to that. Simply select the ones that are “appealing” to you. Important Notes: Most food items in this category are cooked. For dry items such as grains, beans, etc. to be considered for this fairly moist category they must be steamed or boiled in just enough amount of vegetable broth so as to be reconstituted with enough minerals and water before consumption. All food items in this category are prepared from their raw whole state. All fish are steamed from fresh raw.
