Resistance Training Equipment

"Resistance training equipment does not have to be confusing of overwhelming"

There are simple principles to understand so you can clarify what resistance training equipment you should chose for your weight loss exercise.

I will also give you suggestions for where you can get these supplies.

If you read “Resistance Training” and saw the definition of resistance, it is different from weight training. “Weight training” involves weights. Resistance training is any kind of resistance.

When performing resistance training, all you need is resistance for targeted muscles. So this give you a lot of latitude. Resistance equipment can be the floor, a chair, your body, a wall, a table, etc. Resistance training equipment can be anything that you can push or pull from and use your body weight to create resistance.

An example of this is the simple push-up. When you do a push-up, you are using your body weight against gravity to stress the chest muscles and triceps. You can reduce the resistance by changing your position so that you are using your knees as the fulcrum for the push-up instead of your toes, you will be able to reduce your resistance. This is because you are only pushing your body-weight from your knees upwards. When you are doing a push-up with your toes as the fulcrum, you are using the weight of your whole body.

Another way of reducing the resistance is to do a push up against a table. So you are putting your body in an angle and there is less gravitational pull.

For those who have not done resistance exercise for a long time, or also for women, you will want to learn different ways to change your resistance.

Or you can get resistance training equipment that does this for you.

When I look for resistance training equipment for my clients, I look for the following criteria:

High Quality

It will last for a long time and will not breakdown very quickly.

Allows for a Wide Variation of Resistance

Some times a piece of equipment will allow a small range of resistance. Like if you have two pairs of dumbbells, you will only have two levels of resistance. If you use these and get stronger, you will need more resistance to keep getting good results. So I look for the ability to change resistance in a wide degree.

Allows a Lot of Different Exercises

Some resistance exercise equipment do not allow you to perform certain exercises. This can be frustrating for me and my client because I have to get the client to spend more time and expense. So your resistance training equipment should be able to do this as well.

Comfortable to Use

There are some pieces of resistance training equipment, that have all the other benefits I list here BUT they are so so uncomfortable and even painful to use. The grip is too hard or poorly shaped so it hurts my clients hands. Many of my clients are women and they are more sensitive to this.

Takes Little Space

There are a lot of incredibly effective pieces of equipment. But you need a separate room in your house to use them. They are virtual home gyms. For most this is not helpful. Personally, I like something compact and easy to store. I also find most of my clients like this too.

Good Value

Good things cost money. The real question is “What value are you getting?” Even if there was a limit of what I can spend, I want to know that what I spend gives back a lot of value.

Taking these things into account, I tested many different types and forms of equipment. For my clients, I found the best choices came down to three pieces of resistance training equipment:

Resistance Bands

The most helpful piece of equipment for resistance training are "Resistance Bands." With a high quality set of bands, you can get all the benefits I listed above. You can learn what to look for and which I recommend and why. Click to learn about Resistance Bands

Buying Weights

For some, you will simply prefer using real weights. There are some things to know before making a purchase so that you are not wasting your time and money. Click to learn about Weight Training Equipment

Metabolism Makeover

Weight training alone will not help you breakthrough your weight loss plateau or give you long-term weight loss. You need to have a comprehensive program that incorporates weight training. The Metabolism Makeover is a comprehensive program that shows you when and how to use weight training to acheive your weight loss goals.
