Visceral Fat

"Visceral fat is different from other body fat.
It is a threat to your health and to your life."

It is also called intra-abdominal fat, refers to the fat that surrounds the internal organs. Subcutaneous fat, on the other hand, is body fat that is close to the skin's surface and is considered less dangerous, and easier to lose, than this visceral type of fat.

Definition of Viscera is

“noun:  internal organs collectively (especially those in the abdominal cavity).”

So fat is fat in this area, as opposed to fat under the skin.

Fat under the skin is subcutaneous fat.

"Sub = Beneath.
Cutaneous = of skin, relating to skin
"

This type of fat has been specifically linked to high cholesterol, high insulin, high triglycerides, high blood pressure and other problems.[1][2][3]

Here's a video excerpt from "The View" where one of the co-authors of "You: On A Diet" is explaining the health ramifications of belly fat.

Heart Disease

Studies have shown that those with high belly fat are more susceptible to heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure due to unhealthy levels (low levels) of good cholesterol (HDL) and high levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides. They are also susceptible to diabetes due to low insulin sensitivity.

What Causes It?

Sedentary people, smokers and drinkers have been shown to have more intra-abdominal fat, than active people who are non-smokers and non-drinkers. Stress and depression also play major roles in the storage of fat in the abdominal cavity of the body.

Harder To Lose

This fat is harder to lose than subcutaneous fat because it is more deeply embedded in the body's tissues. It is only measured truly accurately by an imaging machine that can see how much of the abdomen is made up of visceral fat.

Belly Fat

A person may be within a healthy weight range, but still have too much intra-abdominal fat around the vital internal organs, such as the kidneys and liver.

What Can Be Done About It?

Losing weight through proper eating and effective exercise can help reduce it. The problem most people are facing though is that they are exercising too much and/or too intensely and not getting results. They are not losing their visceral fat. Their waist line is not getting smaller. They are also cutting back how much they eat and that is not working as well.

At best, they are getting sporadic results. It seems to work sometime and not other times. It is very frustrating. Most people trying to lose weight have tried more than one diet already.

I help people by getting them on to the correct exercise plans for their exact level of fitness. It is a new method of weight loss designed for people who cannot lose weight. By aligning the exercise with the patients level of health and fitness, all their fat melts off the body and this includes visceral fat. You will see the waist line shrink very steadily when nothing else has worked before.
