Why A Raw Food Diet?
"Why do a raw food diet in the first place?" The more raw and uncooked foods you eat the better your health will get and the better you will feel. This is also assuming that you ate a diet of cooked foods. If you had a diet of a lot of processed foods (which is the case for most people), then the more benefits you will receive. This is simply because raw foods are easier for your body and metabolism to convert from its eaten state to the nutrients your cells need. It happens with very little effort on the part of your body. Raw foods also provide an abundance of xxxxenzymes and other extremely beneficial elements to your body. Empty Food When food is cooked the nutrients are depleted in the cooking process. Also, heat kills enzymes. So you lose some of the most important benefits of foods when they are cooked. You can read more about enzymes here. Processed Foods Take Empty Food and Add Toxins Too It
Processed foods are not only cooked, they are altered through heat and chemicals to last longer on a store shelf, in your fridge or freezer, in your cabinet and in a plastic wrapper. Processed foods take the extra step of getting a cooked food that already has a lot of important nutrients removed, but they remove more with more cooking. Then they ADD poisonous chemicals to color it, flavor it, and preserve it so that it can be stored longer and cheaper. For most Americans and more and more modern societies around the world, the diets are predominantly processed foods. The Product of Processed Food
As a result of this change in human dietary consumption you have this quote on the Center for Disease Control. “Obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally …. Obesity and overweight pose a major risk for serious diet-related, chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and certain forms of cancer. The health consequences range from increased risk of premature death, to serious chronic conditions that reduce the overall quality of life. Of especial concern is the increasing incidence of child obesity. (World Health Organization)” So when you look at a raw food diet and what the PRACTICAL reasons are for doing it, it is to regain a diet that provides the nutrients your body needs in the greatest abundance. This allows you to get what you want out of your body. Weight loss, better health, lower blood pressure, etc. Most health problems don't need to be cured. You just keed to take the cause of the problem away. For most, the problem is malnutrition. They are eating food but their cells are not getting the nutrients they need. That’s all. If this is so good, why isn’t everyone doing it? Basically it is training, indoctrination and addiction. A lot of cooked and processed foods are addictive and more convenient to acquire. Plus we simply have been indoctrinated to do it. Canibals are indoctrinated to eat humans. They do get ill and have a lower level of health from it but that just all they know. So another diet will seem strange to them just as theirs seems strange to us. Convenience is a common factor as well. When you are at work and you are hungry you need food pretty soon. Cooked meat keeps longer than raw and the same goes for a lot of vegetables. So it also became a way to keep food longer. So it just seeped into our lifestyle over time. Billions of dollars of investment into marketing also has a large part to play in when our diet is so poor. Cooked foods now, especially processed foods are also addictive. They dehydrate the body and cause hunger and cravings. I get into the specifics of this in my book but that is another reason as well. Don't Look At It As Either-Or
If you want to do better increase the amount of raw foods! You may end up eating 100% raw. But you may also eat some protein and the rest of your food is raw and do this the rest of your life. It is up to you and your goals. A raw food diet is best seen as a continuum. There can be no raw foods and there can be 100% raw foods. So it will be more practical and simple to speak in terms of the level of the raw food diet rather than whether it is or isn’t a raw food diet. Keep looking at it from a practical benefit-based view and you will do fine. The Hype
Now, I want to get into the hype of raw food. Yes, there are celebrities that do it and it has new appeal in this ever-growing “green” and environmental consciousness. The fact is that the experience of being on a raw food diet, a 100% raw food diet, is profound. It really cannot be described. It can be described as miraculous, and spiritual. But unless you experience it, you just won’t have an idea of what I mean. I have seen many illnesses “cured” on a totally raw foods diet. You can search forums and success stories and they are incredible. I use the quotes around the word "cured" because what I find is that the vast majority of times there is not a curing of a condition. When there is a removal of a toxic substance the body will return to normal. When you give someone arsenic they will get ill. When you stop giving that person arsenic they get better. But they aren't cured. You just stopped poisoning them. Not many people know this but when you eat cooked food you body responds as if it was defending itself from a toxin, infection or trauma. There is something called "leukocytosis." This the development of white blood cells to defend against infection. This occurs when cooked food is ingested. You can read about it here at http://www.rawfoodinfo.com/articles/art_leukocytosisandcooked.html. Even on a mostly raw food diet, there are raving benefits that people get. But to make it short, a totaly raw food diet is a life changing experience. I am not trying to encourage you. I am just stating some facts.
